Vitamin Health: Lowering Your Cholesterol

High cholesterol is becoming increasingly common today. More people are diagnosed for the first time each year and not surprisingly, the average age of those diagnosed with elevated cholesterol levels is getting lower and lower. Medication is not the only answer. A lifestyle change including many foods that lower cholesterol and heart healthy vitamins may be all that is needed to reach and maintain healthy levels.

Several foods that lower cholesterol levels include those high in fiber and those high in omega-3 fatty acids. Oatmeal and other high fiber grains, fruits and vegetables all reduce the absorption of cholesterol. The correct balance of omega-3 fatty acids achieved by increasing the intake of fatty fish helps lower blood pressure. Tree nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, are also helpful foods that can lower cholesterol. Not all fats and oils are bad. Olive oil, in particular extra-virgin olive oil, is full of anti-oxidants that lower LDL.

Many vitamins and supplements have been developed for those who need more help in maintaining optimal levels. Choosing the right vitamins and supplements can seem a bit overwhelming. Look for formulas designed for heart health, as these are most likely to aid the quest for healthy cholesterol levels.
